This week we will be joined by CAIS Sustaining Partner The S/L/A/M Collaborative for the presentation: Building a Sustainable and Resilient Future: Reimagining the Campus Master Plan

How can sustainable practices and climate resilience planning impact the decisions and priorities of a campus planning effort? This presentation proposes a sequential framework for how campuses can integrate these pressing environmental considerations into a traditional planning process, as early as your RFP.

• When (and how) in the planning process can we estimate the operational energy of a proposed or renovated building?
• What energy metrics can inform the decision to adapt a building rather than demolish it and build new?
• When is the best time to consider the maintenance/cost impacts of climate change (heat, flood, storms)?
• What is the cost impact of Energize CT efficiency incentives on planned retrofits and new construction?

We will reference Independent Ed and Higher Ed planning and design solutions as examples, summarizing methods for assessing existing campus facilities and resource consumption (including operational and embodied energy, water, and waste). Understand which tools and data points can, at a planning level, inform realistic implementation goals and can help maximize the value of your school's investment in sustainability and resiliency measures.
