The work of CAIS is directed, and in large part carried out, by six Commissions and the Board of Trustees. All are made up of volunteer professionals from member schools. Commission members are appointed by the Executive Director, based on suggestions made by Heads of CAIS Schools, active commission members, or those who wish to serve. All commission members serve three-year terms which, depending upon a particular commission's own practices, may or may not be renewable. Commission chairs are appointed by the commission with the approval of the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. They report for their commissions to the Board of Trustees twice each academic year.
Commission appointments are made with three goals in mind; to:

  • Bring outstanding resources of skill and experience to the support of each professional community
  • Provide a diversity of perspective and personal / professional backgrounds
  • Involve as many different schools as possible in the work of CAIS
